‘Something we haven’t seen’ – Mars rover takes selfie before landing

Scientists say the site is ideal for pursuing the primary purpose of diligence – searching for fossil traces of microbial life preserved in the sediments believed to be deposited around the delta and the long-disappeared lake that once fed it.
Samples of perforated rocks from Mars should be stored on the surface in early 2031 by two future robotic travelers to the Earth to retrieve and deliver Earth.
Another color photo, released Friday, shows the rocks captured just minutes after landing, showing the rocky expansion of the landscape around the landing site and the delta cliff in the distance.
Hwang said the mission’s surface team will test and align the robot’s software for the coming days and weeks without disrupting the vehicle’s robot arm, communication antennas and other equipment.
He said it would be nine “souls” or Tuesdays before the rover prepares for its first test cycle.
One of the tasks of perseverance before searching for signs of microbial life is to stop a miniature helicopter that was flown to Mars for an unprecedented extraterrestrial test flight. But the effort is only two months away, Hwang said.
