Colombo, Sri Lanka (AP) – Sri Lankan police on Thursday arrested a Sri Lankan beauty pageant winner for allegedly pulling a crown off her head and causing injuries. He was later released on bail.
Carolyn Jury, winner of the Ms. World 2020 pageant, has been accused of injuring Ms. Sri Lanka title winner Pushpika de Silva in a TV competition in Colombo on Sunday.
Within minutes of De Silva winning the title, a Sri Lankan jury came on stage and snatched the crown from him, claiming he was unworthy of a divorce. The jury then awarded the crown to the first runner-up, who declared him the winner.
In a statement on his Facebook page, de Silva refused to divorce.
“It simply came to our notice then. Divorce is a different matter. I am not divorced yet, ”she wrote.
Police spokesman Ajit Rohana complained to police that de Silva was injured when his crown was removed.
Rohana said the jury and a model Sula Padmendra were arrested on Thursday on charges of “simple injury and criminal force” and later released on bail. Both women were ordered to appear in court on April 19.
The jury declined to comment as he left the police station.
The incident, which took place on Sunday in a match attended by the Prime Minister’s wife, caused a great stir in the Indian Ocean island nation. On Monday, tournament organizers said they would return the crown to de Silva.
